Key Estate Plan Items During COVID-19

Like most other attorneys, we continue to work over the phone and online. Right now, many people are concerned they do not have a plan in place for emergencies like the current, corona virus situation.  While estate planning can be complex, if business and tax concerns are involved, for most people, however, basic components can provide peace of mind that your wishes are followed.

Everyone should have at least : 1) a Will, 2) a Power of Attorney, and 3) a Medical Directive ("Living Will").  Primarily, a Will allows you to outline how your assets will be gifted, while the Power of Attorney permits another person to act on your behalf for financial and health care decisions, and last, the medical directive provides guidance to medical professionals on your treatment, when the decision for terminal, end-of-life care arises.

Preparing those 3 documents now can alleviate conflict and court involvement, especially for issues with appointing a guardian over minor children and where someone becomes incapacitated and can no longer act for him or herself.

Aside from those 3 basic components, we also remind everyone to review their beneficiary designations on non-probate assets, such as retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and annuities.  If you are currently concerned that you have not implemented these 3 basic components, please reach out to us online or by phone and we will do our best to quickly accommodate you. For most of our estate plans, we provide affordable, flat fee pricing.
